  Curtain Tassels

Although there are various kinds of curtain tassels on the market, you’ll be amazed that it is not always easy to find the exact colour to match your colour scheme.

Besides that, making your own tieback tassels is a lot more fun. You can be very creative and mix and match yarn and colours that blend in with your decorative colours.

Here is how to make your own stylish curtain tassels.curtain tassels

What you’ll need to make these gorgeous curtain tassels

  1. A hard cover book of suitable width and thickness or a piece of cardboard.
  2. Large beads, for this pattern 4 large beads for each tassel
  3. Some smaller beads
  4. 1 ball crochet cotton (50g ball)
  5. 2 balls of fancy yarn (fancy mohair yarn was used for this pattern). Depending on the wool and the required fullness of the tassel one ball may be sufficient.
  6. 2 or 3 different matching double-sided coloured thin satin polyester ribbons (3mm x 6m). The third colour was 6mm x 6m. Again it is a personal choice of how much ribbon you would like. You may like more ribbon in your tassel, then of course you'll need some more.
  7. 2m cord in a matching colour.

Directions how to make the curtain tassels

  • Cut the cord in half. Take a needle and a large piece of crochet cotton. Make a loop on the end and wand the crochet cotton around the end of the loop (see picture below). To finish of neatly thread the needle under the cotton winding and pull through. Cut the thread with scissors. Now do the other side the same.

  • Cut the length of the ribbons in hald and wind them aroun the book/cardboard.
  • Take both ends of the yarn and the crochet cotton together and start winding around the book/piece of cardboard until you reach the required fullness of the tassel.
  • While the tassel is still on the book/cardboard tie one side together very tight with a long piece of crochet cotton. You may like to use a large needle to do this. It makes it easier to get your thread underneath the yarn.
  • Gently take the tassel of the book/cardboard and then cut the bottom. Make sure the top is reall very tight, if not secure it with another knot.
  • Put both threads (from either side of the knot) through the eye of a large needle and put one of the smaller beads on it.
  • Take the part with the bead in your hand and turn it over. The ribbons should be on the outside now.

  • Thread your needle from the bottom to the top (where the ribbon is) then put the four large beads on the needle and thread.
  • Take the cord and sew the tassel tightly to the centre of the cord. Wind the cotton around the cord a few times and finish by threading the needle under the winding. Cut the thread with scissors.
  • Now trim the bottom to make sure all threads of the tassel are of equal length.

Really, there is no limit to your imagination for making curtain tassels. You can use ribbons, beads, ribbons with beads at the end, various yarns such as silk yarn, fur yarns etc. The above tieback tassels is just to get you started.
